KAWS Award
at the 2009 Kansas Scholastic Art Awards
The annual 2009 Scholastic Art Exhibition was held throughout
the month of February. On Feb. 9th, Nancy Squire and Mary Sue Foster awarded the
KAWS Fiberart awards at the Opening and Awards Ceremony. A wonderful tall
coiled-yarn basket with fringe titled "Indian Moon" won the first award. It was
created by Savanna Davis (pictured below), a student at Salina Central High
School. Her art teacher is Nancy Lysell.
The second winner was Amber Prieb from Hesston High School. Her teacher is
Kathleen Schroeder. Amber wove an exquisite cardwoven sash. She said she ordered
the cards and learned how to warp and weave the sash from information gathered
from the internet.. The sash was done with excellent craftsmanship, especially
the even edges and the repeating bird design.
